The Model Prayer from Matthew 6:13. This message originally delivered on June 30, 1996.

Welcome, you're listening to the expository word podcast with Kimber Kaufman. Currently we are in a series from the New Testament book of Matthew, chapter six, and Kimber is teaching through the Lord's Prayer. Thank you for joining us. Let's turn now to Kimber. Does anything change in the way you live? If you're at war there's been a war change anything. Maybe we could ask how many people live through World War Two? You have you? Did that change the way life was in America. Anybody fought in any of the wars? It certainly changes things. Think we asked the people of Bosnia this morning. We're changing life. It was hit yes, drastically. They say the Cold War is over. But you remember even, for instance, the amazing emphasis of national security during the Cold War days, billions of dollars spent to see if the enemy was going to attack if they were shooting a missile. Think of all the movies that have been made just about the Cold War. The Bible teaches us that if you're a follower of Jesus Christ, you are in a war is very real. It's very sure. The three enemies that we fight are the world, the flesh and the devil. We live in a world this system, this entire system we're in is hostile to God going against God. If you listen to the world, you'll be listening to that which is at enmity with God. Then of course there is our own flesh. I don't have to teach my children to lie, they automatically lie we have to teach them to do good naturally. We have a fallen nature we have to fight against. And we fight against that as long as we're on this earth, even as redeemed believers. Then there's the devil himself. And his host of demons desiring to gulp you down to greedily destroy you desiring to put pitfalls and traps in your way trying to hinder you and stop you from believing and seeing the glory of Jesus Christ. This war is important. It's so important that Jesus Christ comes to earth, to die on the cross for our sins, but also to teach us and we have the gospel messages. And as he teaches us, He gives us here's the way you're supposed to pray. First off, don't pray this way. Don't just keep doing vain. babblings and repeating the same phrases, and don't pray to show off, but pray in order to to you have a father and pray and secret to him. And then of the six petitions, three of them have to do with God, but three of them have to do with us and of the three that has to do with us. The final one, the sixth one will read today in our study is about this war. He says this lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Holy Scriptures full of narratives of temptations. Expect there for Christian that your wife will be abundantly garnished with them as is a rose with thorns. That's what Spurgeon said. If if this morning before you came to college park, you got a phone call. And the phone calls from the Indiana State Police and they said Mr. Johnson, is this you? Mr. Johnson? Yes. Well, you are going to church today, aren't you? Mr. Johnson? Well, yes. How did you know? Well, we just know those things. You're going to college park, aren't you? Yes. Or Mr. Johnson. Let me ask you something. Do you did you hear about the accident last night? No, there was an action. Yeah, there was a circus train wreck. And there's a whole group of bloodthirsty crazed lions at loose in your neighborhood. We just want you to be careful as you go out to your car. Would that change the way you got in your car this morning? Would you be so careful just to walk out in person electric garage door opener just let it is open. I was afforded this week and spoke at a conference for couple days took a couple days to fish and I will tell you that down there in Florida along the freshwater lakes where people live, there's alligators. You see them all the time. You walk around the lake a little bit differently when there's alligators than you do a lake in Indiana, where there's just snapping turtles or something. It's different you're watching. Well, the Bible tells us we're in a war that there is the devil like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. The Bible says Watch out the spiritual warfare do all that you can to stand in that day because Satan will try to get you your own flesh will try to get you this world we live in will try to get us there in the middle of all this, Jesus says your six petitions to make the first three have to do with God, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come your will be done. The next three has to do with us. Provide us with our physical needs. Forgive us our debts as we forgive those indebted to us. And now petition number six, the final one, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. It's amazing to me if we listen to let Jesus teach us how to pray for his stuff and think about it. six repetitions the first three go to God the second three, the final to deal with sin. This type of thing if that's the kind of teaching on prayer that you get in our Christian television networks in the Christian radio networks, and in the Christian bookstore, the popular books, two of the three requests has to do with sin past sin. Forgive us our debts, and future sin lead us not into temptation. Oh, I wonder if you're feeling or sensing the impact of these verses to pray through them as to change your outlook on life. Praying this father today please don't let me fall into temptation. Earnest Christian men and women are not so much afraid of trials as of temptations. The great horror of the Christian is sin. Not trouble sin. Regularly, daily, something about this. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive those indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Daily, regularly were to pray about this thing called temptation that we wouldn't be let into it. It's very interesting word. It's the word that read is the word into along with the word I bring. Do not bring me into temptation. Let my path and temptation not meat. And the word temptation now when we use it in English, we always think of the negative when you think of temptation, you always think of evil. But the way it's used in the Greek language, it's a neutral word, it could be good or bad. And what is very interesting is you stop thinking if you're thinking Christians warn you if you think you were raising Kimber, why would Jesus teach us to pray when James says, Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God. For God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tend to be any man. We know temptation didn't come from God. So why would we pray don't lead us into temptation. Or even the same word is found in James chapter one, verses two and three, where the Scripture says, count all joy, my brothers when you fall into various trials, same word. So if it's a if we kind of joy when we fall into trials, if we're to realize that temptation never comes from God, why then do we have to do this? Well, ultimately, the final answer is because Jesus said to Jesus said it, that settles it. Go on with your life. But the real solution or not that that's not the real solution. But another answer that can help us is this what Christian has said for century Church Fathers said this. In regards to this dilemma, this petition I love this, listen carefully. This petition is not about logic, or theology. But the heart's desire and inclination that cause the believer to want to avoid the danger and trouble that sin creates. This is what he said, It is the expression of the redeemed soul. That soul despises and fears sin, that it wants to escape all prospects of falling into it, choosing to avoid rather than having to defeat temptation, or in that, in that something another man wrote, and this is so good, I want to read it to you just pay attention to these words. Listen, we when we honestly look at the power of sin, and have their own weakness and sinful propensities, we shudder at the danger of temptation or even trial. This petition is another plea for God to provide what we ourselves do not have it as an appeal to God to place a watch over our eyes or ears or mouth or feet in our hands, that in whatever we see here or say, in any place we go and anything we do, He will protect us from sin This petition is a safeguard against presumption and a false sense of security and self sufficiency. We know that we will never have arrived spiritually, and that we will never be free of the danger of sin until we are with the Lord. With Martin Luther. We say we cannot help being exposed to the assaults but we pray that we may not fall in parish under them. Our Dear Lord prayed for us in his great intercessory prayer in John now chapter 17. He prayed this, my prayer Father is not that you take them the believers out of the world, but that you protect them from the evil one. Key is this, lead us not into temptation, deliver some evil? What is it about heart and soul? Here it is, friends, is father keep me from situations that will tempt me to sin. Every day of your life, you say what am I supposed to pray about? Every day of your life as you're asking God for physical necessities? And as you're asking God to keep the parental relationship, right and the brother and sister relationship right? So you're also asking father here, as I don't know what we do not know what a day we bring forth. I'm not sure what's down the road. But here as about most concerned, don't let me sin keep me from even the temptation of sin. Poor the the values of the Jesus places in this prayer are so supremely different than what we have even in church. This prayer shows how much we must depend on God. If we're hungry, we can pray for bread we see that clearly. But here's a situation that we have to by faith accept and that is this our situation is so desperate, we are so weak, that we must cry out to God for help. One man wrote this, as Christians grow and holy living, they sense their own inherent moral weakness, and rejoice that whatever virtue they possess flourishes is a fruit of the Spirit. More and more they recognize the deceptive subtleties of their own hearts and the malicious cunning of the evil one. And fervently request of their Heavenly Father lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. I'll tell you friends, I believe this with all my heart. There is a sense in which this prayer of Jesus the reason guys, Augustine, Luther and where's the guys could never wear it out. You can pray every day of your converted life, it will never grow old. You can apply it and adapt to different situations that you face. But here's something friends, something is we have got to understand this. If we are immature, if we are shallow in our thinking, if somehow we're self confident, we will not really want to break make this prayer you will need to and the young little child says give me candy give me this give me my bottle do all these things. Well, we understand that Jesus teaches us what's better than we even know for ourselves. Think of how loving and how kind and how good and how skillful and wisdom our savior is in telling us how to pray everything you could ever pray in his little prayer. Something about it sin is so bad it's so harmful Jesus so loving and so why is the teachers to say this father daily again today I'm asking you keep me from temptation. I don't know what's ahead today. But one thing is this I know I'm weak and I know I need your protection. You see, this petition should humble us every single day. Pride is going to be our downfall. him to think of the standard thing he lists the fall Pride goeth before a fall Samsung thought as he was in Delilah as arms. As she cut his hair. He stood up. And he thought I'll go out and Slay those Philistines like I did before. And he did not know that his strength had gone from him. The growing believer realizes how important this prayer is the young believer may not. And we asked you as your pastor, when was the last time you honestly made this prayer. Jesus instructed us to make a daily da Carson says if you haven't, is it not the mark of spiritual carelessness and insensitivity to the spiritual dimensions of human existence? When we neglect such prayers? Go into God's What does I'm supposed to prove I'm sort of lost. Sometimes I'm not sure what to pray. Here's something for yourself, for your spouse, for your kids, for your family on a daily basis. You cry out to Him and lead us not into temptation. Keep us in temptation away from each other. When we want to be close to city. Stop and think of how important this is friends, the Bible says is a Proverbs The Book of Wisdom. It says this watch it says it in two places. It says the wise man is he's going through his course of life. He looks up and he sees evil now everyone just for the sake of illustration. Let's just say whatever this is, this is just evil. All of this right here. All right. You think evil. The wise man foresees the evil now here he is. He's comes walking over and he sees that evil. The wise man sees the evil and hides Like Mark Twain said, the surest way to overcome temptation is to be a coward. Go and hide. The simple now listen to simple guy who is not wise, he continues to go and he is punished for it. We see the temptation is talking to my here's what I'm trying to get you to say, yes, we pray this prayer every day. And also we practice this biblically. And that is this. Here's the greatest problem. You look up at sin. And you go, that's curious. That's interesting. That's sort of neat. Well, I'm not going to do it. I just want to look, I'm just a little curious. I want to know a little bit more about it. It looks so interesting, just like Eve did with the apple. If it was an apple and you get around it, and pretty soon it is alluring. It's attractive. It's magnetic. Why? Because you've got three things working against you, this world, the flesh and the devil. And they're calling you to the sin and they're wanting you to sit and you'll fall into it. So man looks at me in my office, does it mean that this is not a joke, everybody, this is dead serious. Man looks at me in my office with a sort of grayish washed out look on his face, because he's so totally shocked that maybe his family is going to be lost forever because of a sin of immorality. And he says, I'm not sure if just what happened but we ended up in her hotel room. Bo Loni you tell me you're just driving along. Oh, so let me go to this motel. Like I'll go knock on the door. Oh, temptation. That's not what happened. That is not what happened at all. In fact, listen, friends, we need to remember this we got to run from we have our responsibility as well as making this prayer both go hand in again. Spurgeon said something. keep clear of Lucifers matches. You've got enough mischief in your heart without going where you go, we'll get more. If anybody feels that he is so very gracious and good that he can safely enter into temptation. I am sure that he is laboring under a very great mistake. I would say to him, brother, there is no devil enough in you. That excuse me devil. Excuse me, brother, there is devil and nothing you without you're sending out invitation cards to seven more. Here's how temptation works. Friends, look, this is in James chapter one verses 13 through 16. If you want to turn there quickly, but I want you to see something. James chapter one teaches us this temptation does not come from God. We've already talked about that. Verse 13. God tries us to bring out the best in us he desires us to succeed to go on and sanctification. Same time tempts us to bring out the worst in us. He desires us to fail. He sets traps and snares. And notice what happens step one is desire. It says there in James chapter one and let me just take a second to get there myself. In James chapter one. It gives us the step the process of how this takes place. In James one in verse 13, the Scripture says when tempted, no one can say God has tempted me, for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Notice this desire were dragged away by our own less, there's several things that say you're looking at verse 14, if you would, but each one is tempted when by his own evil desire he's dragged away first of all makes a couple of things quickly than this text. Number one, it says your own evil desire, the text is very clear that you possess the desire. Now we live in a day and age where you can blame your parents, you can blame your grandparents, you can blame your spouse, you can blame your school teacher you can blame somebody else. And I will say that what Jesus does say Woe unto him that causes one of these little ones to fall. And there is something about adults making life so miserable for children, that the God's going to call people into a content or into account for that. So I'm not Missmiss wishing this but I am saying we live in a day and age where nobody's defaults are like no fault insurance is like no fault sin. I didn't do it. The text says you and your own evil desires. And then it says they drag you away. Look at verse 14, but each one is tempted when by his own evil desire, he's dragged away. Now this is the word to where you get the word like a Luer it has to do with the trick and animal to come in close to that you can kill it. We know in deer hunting guys, the deer hunt and know how to do this. They take they take their deer call and they do it a certain way and it's a sounds like a doe in heat. If you can believe it. You can make a deer called sound like a doe in heat. And what does that do that That's a tracks of bucking rut believe me. Now I'm not personally experienced that knowing how this works, but I know that does happen with hunters and they can bring in that that buck comes charging over the hill thinking there's a doe there because you might you can go another sound and it sounds like something else you can take the the clattering horns and you can collect them together not horns, but antlers that you've collected together, and another big buck thanks. There's two other bucks in my territory. I'm gonna go check them out. He goes racing through. You'd like to fish you throw the lure out there. The blower comes through the water. There's all different lures you have the shows on TV, they show you how this floor is better than all the rest of it. And what's the role luring when it comes to the water and makes the fish want to grab it? This is what happens is the scripture says our own lust that go astray start to drag us away. And then we become enticed. And that shows us the next statement there. Step two is enticement. Here Here it is, in verse 14, that each one is tempted when by his own evil desires. He's dragged away and enticed. When last half conceived, verse 15, than after desire has conceived to give birth to sin. There's really a step two and a half in here and that is this bluff conceives you it takes you as prisoner then there's actual action where you actually sin. Verse 15, then afterward desire is conceived it gives birth to sin and sin when it is full grown gives birth to death. And that's step four is death. So we don't just give into temptation. There's a process the James even tells us about me give you an illustration. Step one, for David to look and see the woman Bathsheba taking a bath was not a sin. The second look was that lead to the desire. And as David then started to think about it, he started to getting enticed, just as an animal gets enticed by the tricky call or by the loo or going through the water. And then after that starts to conceive, it starts to drag David away, and he gives birth to action and sin when this finish gives birth to death. We're gonna come back in August and start Second Samuel back in August. And we're going to pick up right where we left off where David the consequences of David's sin with Bathsheba. And something I'm going to have Steve do on that Sunday is we're going to have a scripture verse that says the weight of the Transgressor is hard. And as we go through reading chapters of Scripture, we're just going to have it on there about 30 times and Steve's going to pull it down one after another says let's do our scripture reading verse one, the way of the transgressors hard, verse two, the way of the transgressors, heart, verse three, the way of the transgressors, heart, verse four, the way of the transgressors heart, because my friends, we don't seem to get it. This is exactly what happens. Our flesh works against this, the world system says oh, it's alright, don't worry about it. And the devil is there doing thisis all of this happens and leads us into temptation. That's how can we fall. So friends we need to remember that Jesus Christ is telling us in regards this issue of vital importance, this sin issue, pray regularly crown to God to protect you. As God the Father for help in this area. It's the heart cry of the believer in father something as I go about this day. Here it is, I don't want to send keep me from the temptation. It's a demonstration of our weakness. When man wrote this, you can't stop temptations from coming, but you can decide what you're going to do with each one. You can't stop the birds from flying in the sky, but you can keep them from making a nest in your hair. You can't stop the devil from singing these be watching songs in your ear, but you don't have to join them in singing to do it. You can't stop the devil from displaying his wares in the shop window and urging you to buy but you don't have to make a purchase. You can't stop the devil from dropping his brats on your doorstep and knocking incessantly on your door but you don't have to open the door. Take them in and warm them, cold them and feed them. The same man wrote this. When a girl approached me in a hotel lobby, and smilingly asked, Would you like to have a little fun tonight? It was only a temptation and enticement to infidelity is not sin, our hospitality makes it the difference. Friends I'm just wondering here I'm just wondering how much sorrow that you read here. I usually go outside the walls of this room and said if we could listen to the sorrow in the facility of Indianapolis, but let's just say the sorrow, the tears that you have cried the grief that you've had in your heart. The agonizing sense of despair because of some terrible situation that has entered your life because of sin. I'm just one During how much of that could have been spared, if people would have taken Jesus seriously, and prayed on a daily basis, lead us not into temptation. I believe you're very foolish. If you don't make this a regular prayer in your life. I simply believe this is the teachings of Jesus. He said, This is how you pray, and you need to do it. He also said something else, but deliver us from evil. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Now, this is rather interesting, the word but there is Allah in strong contrast, other words, latest production of contrasting that, here's something else. Deliver us, rescue us, draw us to yourself, get us out, is what Paul says, Who will deliver me from this body of death, there's the same word deliver. Keep me away Deliver me from evil, but it's interesting from it's just away from evil. But listen to this, this word evil. Pony Rose is used in the nominative case, this usually denotes a title in the Greek. Hence Christ is saying deliver us from the evil one. Not just evil. But now he has a specific prayer to be delivered from the lion who was out to seek to destroy you. Father, I'm your child, I come to this last petition. And I say leave me not as good tradition. keep me away from sin that could mean the world in the flesh. But also deliver me from the evil one. That is the satanic influence upon my life, don't let him have an advantage. Again, allow me to read you the real Lord's prayer in John 17, in which Jesus says, I pray not that you should take them out of the world, but that you would keep them from the evil one. Here again, Jesus prayed. This is a seer thing. Today we live in a day in which people sort of laugh about the devil. It's sort of a joke. You believe in devils? What kind of crazy Kook Are you? Oh, Baptists. Okay, now it makes sense. I understand that. I was on the airplane yesterday, coming back from Florida. And I had my computer on. And I turned on the fuel base to look up thoughts on temptation, and the devil and stuff. And I was wishing I had one of those dual passive screens rather than the active screen. Because I'd sort of notice how the query the lady sitting next to me was looking on my screen. And I was going through all these things about the devil and temptation. I was thinking she must think I'm probably some a cult leader or something, you know, what is this? And I was just sort of wondering, there's a little boy on the other side, he's staring me you know, looking at it. The guys want me to play video games, I think are on there or something. But he was looking at it differently. But you know what? There's a sense of this world devils, come on the devil. Come on. Well, I disagree that you know, behind every bush is a double jumping out to get you but I also will tell you, Oh, Jesus Christ, our Lord is teaching us here he is teaching you every day to ask for God's protection from the devil. Do you do that? I would testify that I say this so carefully, is something like I think 40 days now I can't remember something like 40 days, that I've been committed to go through this prayer. And I don't want to violate what Jesus said to do. So I won't say any more than that. But I've been committed to go through this on a daily basis. And I'm going to tell you, of all six of these petitions. This is the one I've seen God answered the most clearly in my life. I have seen wonderful things happen is day after day I have cried out for him to leave me not to dictation and delivery for you. But I'm telling you. It is amazing. Sometimes at the end of the day, I'm just drawn to God and gratitude and look what you've done. Look at the differences in my life. Look at some of these changes. I'm so thankful. We can pray our way. And we can pray God's way. That's why I say no unregenerate no unsaved person if you're truly are not born from the spirit of love, you will not care to ever make this prayer because you will love sin too much. But if you're a true believer, you would say in your heart Oh, I wish more than anything else. If I could push a button I would never sin again. If you can say that you've just made this prayer. If you can say Oh I know. I'm so weak and I know there is one out there by faith. I believe in Christ by faith. I believe there is a devil trying to destroy me and I pray with all of my heart. Oh, please don't let him have his way. By the way me advertise for tonight's service. Tonight we're going to do a how to battle Satan a plea for realism. We're going to study first Peter 589. First Peter 589 says this. Be sober be vigilant because your adversary the devil walk with about his roaring lion seeking whom he may devour whom resisted fast in the faith. Knowing that these days ame afflictions are carried out in the brothers through throughout the world. So with great compassion, we beseech the Lord to live deliverance from temptation deliverance from the devil's influence. Paul goes to great lengths to say, Put on the whole earth. And in the evil day, the special day when Satan is gonna throw US forces at you, when I just seem to what just seems to hurt me as the pastor of this church, is year after year, for instance, as an example, year after year will preach on how to affair proof your marriage in January during marriage and family month, and year after year. It's always a big month, and we have a bigger crowd than normal, everybody comes, it's all excited. And year after year, the very people that heard me preach that and maybe even shouted, amen are the very people that have affairs, if you want to call it that way, who violate the seventh commandment of the holy Almighty awesome living God. And friends, we need to say this, we need to stop and say listen, you will all want what's best for our kids. So I'm gonna get him in the best schools possible, great, get him in the best schools possible. But don't forget to praise this Lord, Father, lead them not into temptation, Father, deliver them from the devil. This is so big. And yet it just seems to be almost strange to us. The only one of these six petitions that makes any normal natural sense is Give us this day, our daily bread. Outside of that, we don't like this. But in the heart of the true believer is to get a hold of this and say what Jesus knows is best. Right? So I want to encourage you on something. As you go through the trials of life. Some people have sort of insinuated to me as I've been teaching on this prayer, I've said, Man, are you encouraged by this? And some people haven't been? And one of the reasons is they say, Well, you know, I just sort of feel like when I go to prayer, I gotta go through all this thing. I get our Father in heaven, hallowed be the name of it before you can ever get this. Now, listen, the Scripture says things like this, pour out your hearts before him. Just dump out your heart on God, you can do that. Cry out to Him. Some of the great prayers in the Bible are short little prayers that were made like by Nehemiah boom, and just pray those that they're gonna do a go through this because you're talking remember the point Jesus made, you're talking to your father, you don't have to go through some system, you get the freedom to go to your father. So just go with the general life of the spiritual discipline, colts secret prayer, in the general life. These are the petitions that we're supposed to go through. And generally we're supposed to go to those. And Jesus who knows more than we know, he knows what's better for us than we do. We're asking about bowls of the bear. He says this ask that you would not be limited to temptation. Ask that you'd be delivered from the devil. Make this petition to God. You say Kim, why? If he knows that, why does he make a prayer? Just do it? Because Jesus said to do it. That's why I think we're foolish not to pray these prayers, to be delivered from Satan's influence from temptation. His desire is to destroy us and kill us. You know, if you talk about Satan these days, you got ideas of head spinning around and bodies and vomit flying against the wall. You've got all this Ooh, Uri Satan the Devil. Ooh, I feel him Do you feel you know, that kind of attitude? Now he's in music. I've heard sermons. The devil is in music. He's taken over music. It's always the kind of music you don't like that he took over he's an action figures. You know, keep your kids away from him. He's in card plan. You know, the Joker in the car deck. What is the devil? He's in our public schools. Well, we can just keep going and I will say this, maybe he isn't all those things. But I will tell you this friends, if you really want to know what the devil is about, I'll tell you what it's about. We're going to talk about it tonight. But we're gonna talk a little bit about it right now the devil is about this second Corinthians four four, which says the god of this world that's the devil hath blinded the minds of unbelievers. So they cannot see the glory of the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you want to know Christian, the devil attacking your life, I'm gonna tell you what it's going to be like, he is going to attack you towards a couple of things like this. Number one, he's going to make you doubt God's love number two, he's going to make sense seems so wonderful. And number three, he's going to make the atoning work of Jesus Christ a bore to you. Aboard the devil is at work to make us think less and less of Jesus Christ to get a sidetrack to do anything but let the main thing be the main thing that we keep as the main thing. And that is the we would exalt Christ love him. I love what Steve said this service is dedicated to Jesus Christ. Every service should be as we come and we just say, Oh, this is about Christ. We're aligning our lives with him. We're gonna follow him. This is about him. We're gonna love him more honor and more. Get to know Him better. Instead of we get bored stiff with Christianity. People have come to me many times they said, Kim I've been in such as a church for so long and I'm just so sick of this religion I'm so sick of that I'm so sick of this and so I go I am to shake hands with a brother moose I'm sick of that too. Oh, that's religion all that's issues. Christianity is about the person of Christ adoring him loving the magnifying submitting to him following Him with all of our heart soul mind is drink. That's it st is gonna come along and attack us. i You don't need to obey Christ. Well, good. He did. Look how demolish the scriptures in front of Eve. He said, he said, Eve. Did God say don't eat. Then he said, You're not gonna die. Did God say you wouldn't die. Though you don't worry, guys, you're not gonna die. Eve when you eat him that you're going to be like him, he doesn't want what's best for you. I just see it, I'm telling I see it in our country. It's just overwhelming. I see it in this church, as a pastor, it's overwhelming. The lie of the devil has come along and the people sit there and they go, Well, if I do that, if I reconcile my marriage, if I end up if I do want to if I, whatever it is, then that's gonna be boring. That's not gonna be a fun life. Let's say you have just been gulping at the devil's dinner table. And you've been eating his lies. And he's watching you and he looks like a glorious angel of light. And he looks at you this makes sense. This the world is gonna agree the flesh is gonna it's gonna feel right to the flesh is gonna agree with the world. And he's just gonna sit there and smile. And when you go down and destroy your life, he's gonna all sudden set the hook. There ought to be a fear in your heart that the devil is truly a person that is a much greater person than you that wants to destroy your life. There's the warnings in Scripture. And this prayer comes back to say, oh, deliver us from and protect me. So yesterday, we took the family out to eat and we went to the little lake over here on the north side. And there was this, we went to feed the fish and, and there was this mother document with those seven little ducklings. And all the other ducks came to get the bread that we were throwing in. But that Mother Duck kept herself between the other ducklings and us. And those ducklings were sort of looking around her. But there they were behind Mother Duck. And this is the way Christians are behind the Father. Lord, we need you Father, we need you lead us not into temptation deliver us from evil. Well, a man came up to me after the first service to just preach this very same sermon for service. And he said, you know, can we just make a bigger point? Because I think you need to make a bigger point about something and and I think he was right. He said, he said, I think you made it sound like all's we're supposed to do is just pray. And that's it. He goes, we have a part two. And indeed we do. One thing is to pray. And the other thing is to find the other overhead, I can find it. Where did they go? At a strange, Steve good back. Oh, there it is. Okay. Real quickly. We should show you real quickly. Now this is this is taken from a marriage and family wants sermon. And so it says it's not a direct application. But here's biblical principles on how to fare proof your marriage. We've been through this many times, but I want you to see something. You must have a healthy fear of yourself in the thick of the standard thing. He lists the fall. If you're sitting here and I'm talking you hear me talk about adultery, hear me about the double getting you're attacking people during the week and you sit there and you go. Not gonna be me. Well, just remember that's exactly what Peter said before he fell within 24 hours. You can trust yourself as far as you can throw yourself. Look at this, you must do radically drastically with temptation. If you're tempted to do wrong, you've got to deal drastically with it. There has to be a fear in our hearts of fear towards God and a fear that the devil is going to trick us and drag us away. In our own lessons world will go along with it. Crisis cut off your right hand gadget, your right eye is going to tempt you to sin. Don't set your own traps. I'm telling you I have preached this message and we got people in our church and they they started going out to dinner with a member of the opposite sex on a regular basis. I realized that some business situations you have to do that. But don't set your own traps. It seems to me like people don't seem to care. They seem like they suffer see the evil well, they don't want to hide. Just be a complete coward towards sinful temptation and get away. Keep the husband wife relationship with the center of the home. Remember, this has to do with adultery. Practice the biblical view of marital intimacy. I'm telling you friends, the Scriptures teach this. If you don't have a good intimate relationship at home, the devil is going to be in your family. That would be like inviting a 2000 squad strong pit bulls to live in your bedroom with you. I mean, you don't Want to bring the devil into your life? And the one thing you don't want to do is this isn't the pastor that teaches at First Corinthians seven teaches it. Keep the final consequences before you stop and realize that sin is wrong. It's in the way of the transgressors hard. Make yourself accountable to people and not the kind of people that are passive. If you've got an accountability partner, kick them in the rear end when they need to be kicked. Is that fluffy? Hi, how are you? We love you to let you know. Let's get on with it. Remember, God will judge the sinner in these ways. Not close by saying this to you if you're here and you feel sick at heart because you say Kim I have given the temptation as I sit here right now I've fallen. Lord Byron, the English poet wrote once wrote this, no hand can make the clock strike for me the hours that are passed, no amount of effort can recall the stone already thrown. No amount of regret can retract the hurtful words once spoken. No amount of sorrow can undo the damage and a fair does your marriage. No amount of tears can change the adultery into an act of purity, no amount of apologizing or reform the act of neglect. No pen can unright what has already been written, There is no way to put that spilled milk back into the Bible to gather up again the water lost upon the ground. No one can possibly gather the feathers that have been blown by the wind. Only God knows where no amount of prayer or pious living is going to undo the damage caused by undisciplined actions and indulgences. And I could just say now, let's pray that would be pretty discouraging. But I am thankful friends, that we have a Savior that can cleanse us from our sins. Listen, you can develop insight into yourself by examining your past. And that's big today to go back into our past. But the Insight itself will not change the past or the present and listen carefully. When you excuse yourself because of your past. You are consigning yourself to mediocrity forever always to be a victim. If my past is at fault for what I am today, and the past cannot be changed, I am doomed to stay as I am. But there is a sign by your past that says no parking here. If you ignore that sign dwell on the past review in detail you're indicating my future is behind me. This then undercut your growth. Here's what you've done if you've blown in the past and you're so ashamed of your past and you're so sickened by and every time you think about it, you just feel sick and you're it's staining you the future I want to just tell you, this is what repentance does. You say oh god what I have done is wrong and you just make this prayer. Forgive me my debts. If your sin is offensive to someone else, then use make this prayer as I forgive those indebted to me. And then you say this and you forget it you just forget it. You go on and then you say this, leave me not to temptation Deliver me from evil. And you know what's so wonderful about our Savior, He He richly blesses us and cleanses us and deals with us and he's the only one that can deal with our past but he can do it. Remember something about Jesus, he won. He was tempted in all points but he didn't sin. Remember something about the Old Testament stories we've been studying for so long here that when your own sin is the cause of your trouble and you cry out for mercy even when your own trouble is caused by your own sin he's still quick and ready to forgive his people and to cleanse you wish I really wish that there would be a growing group of people this church that daily would be crying out father lead me not it's a temptation but deliver me from evil spray Father in heaven you are so kind you're your son Jesus is so skillful and wisdom so to be praised as the master teacher thank you for the last eight messages we've had here College Park on this model prayer keep us humbly dependent on you. Keep us trusting you. He was walking close with you. We pray this in please stay on the other and that concludes this episode of the expository word podcast. We hope you will join us here for more messages from Kimber Kaufman. Take care
